A sad state/Our $500 dust collector

Since my surgery, I've been buying and playing A LOT of video games. I'm not one of those people who's gonna tell you that games are no good these days and that I long for the good old days. Hardly. Games have become so robust, involved and hybridized that going back to the classics often feels like a cheapened experience. But there are elements of the old days that I miss...

Back when you were buying a finished game that didn't need to be patched and updated out of the box. Back when "exclusive" meant more than DLC and back when there was ONE version of a game.

I've fucking had it with rehash. Whether it be an "HD" version of a game, a re-release with all the DLC on the disc or some "collectors" edition with a bunch of useless swag. Lace and I bought the PS4 back in May and we're sorta regretting it. A lot of this is the reason why.

There are great games for it, they look great, all of that. But go look at a list of games for it. So much of it is shit that's already on PS3! And it's to the point now where they're not even letting games age before releasing them! GTA V?! The PS3 version is in HD, the hard disk is more than capable of holding the DLC, why do we need this?! Faster loadtimes, a little extra content and slightly better graphics aren't gonna make me plunk down money for a game (that even if I didn't own/previously play it) that I can get on PS3 for at least half the cost.

I just got Dead or Alive 5+ for Vita the other day only to find out there's a more final version for PS4 last night. Of course, the Vita game was 20 bucks and the PS4 one is much more, so... All too often, these remakes or whatever see little to no advertising, so keeping track isn't always easy.

I understand that as the technology progresses the dev cycles take longer on fresh games, that's a given. But remaking games from 2-3 years ago is a little ridiculous, if you ask me. Especially when there are so many great, unappreciated and unknown games from years passed that have the basic framework in place and could benefit from the new tech. Lace got the Majora's Mask remake for 3DS in March/April (I think) and THAT is what needs to be done with everything. Take games from the PS1/N64 era or the following generation and remake those. They'd sell more in the long run.

We play our portables and the PS3 more than anything else. The PS4 has a long life ahead of it, no doubt, but it won't be getting much playtime until more original titles start coming out.

Happy 4th, darlings! Gonna celebrate by playing Japanese video games and then we're gonna go find some fireworks to watch with Tomthy, ^^

  1. I heard the PS4 isn't even backwards compatible with all the previous PS games. Is that true? If so, it's even more useless. Sigh. Tell Timothy his Aunt Adrabun says hi! ❤️ Love you, darling.

  2. It's not and Sony has painted themselves into a corner with their alternate strategy. At E3, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One will become backwards compatible with the 360 library via downloadable updates. (It'll gradually include more and more of the library), Wii U is backwards compatible out of the box with the Wii library. Sony is opting for their PS Now streaming service where, FOR A FEE, you can rent games you already paid for and play them that way. *Eyeroll* They're only offering select titles, too. Morons.

I agree with your post too, Reibun! There are so many games that could use a facelift and be given new life with the advanced technology. And it's not even like they're remaking/releasing games that didn't sell well or only acheived cult status. GTA V is one of the greatest selling titles of all time! Most of them are the same way. More proof that despite record profits, the game industry is too scared to take chances.

Will tell Timothy for you, Adrabun! Love my bun girls! XOXO

  3. Would it surprise anyone if I said I'd never used a consoles backwards compatibility? XD I certainly understand why people would want it, it's just not a console seller for me personally. Especially Nintendo consoles. They feel the need to redesign the controller for every console and then I have to go buy the old one to play the old games?! Eat shit, Big N... It's also kind of ironic that Sony started the BC thing and now they're without it... Whatev. Love you girls! :3
